Les Chaussons de la Belle and Rubelli. A Fascinating Story

One of my most cherished thoughts about Les Chaussons de la Belle is giving our passionate contribution to keep the centennial legendary Italian handicraft tradition going on. I have the great privilege of getting together two fabulous Italian manufacturers: Rubelli with its magnificent fabrics and Lanzoni & B, producer of our collection.

Working on the samples with Francesco Lanzoni is a rapturous experience: only excellence will do, and my wildest dream of an irresistible, unique shoe or bag comes true! When I talked about an Eighteenth Century inspiration, it came out lightened to the essence, both under an aesthetic and a technical point of view. No gimmicks, no mediocrity, no compromises, our only aim being the highest quality and beauty: a woman has to walk with the allure of a sensuous feline.

When I showed the Rubelli silk brocades and iridescent stripes to Francesco Lanzoni he touched and caressed them. He was thrilled and seduced … You can discover the results in the collection Les Chaussons de la Belle. Our shoes, the delightful “’Insolente” bag, the booties with our bows or with Diana the Huntress feathers come to life with all the fascinating colours of Venice. Their names are a homage to its splendour.

Rubelli, the Venetian family firm founded in 1858 and now in its fifth generation, relies on a tradition of weaving treasured in its historical archives and library at Ca’ Corner Spinelli in Venice. Dating back to the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, these unique textile records are a source of inspiration and research, together with the creative look forward to new designs, new ideas … The mill is extremely modern. At the same time four original hand looms dating back to the late Eighteenth Century, in full working order, keep on weaving, a true jewel in this art. Yes, we can have the best of tradition and modernity!

From their historical location on the Canal Grande, their splendid furnishing fabrics bring the luminous colours of Venice to palaces, theatres, elegant houses and luxurious hotels all around the world. They appear in Dangerous Liaisons, Valmont or Casanova, films about fabled seducers (an endangered species, indeed…). Rubelli creates fascinating exhibitions, like “Lampas, damasks and brocades in paintings by Pietro Longhi: portraits of eighteenth century Venice by Rubelli”. Inspiring …

I love Pietro Longhi’s apparently formal conversation pieces, a look into those palaces caressed by incessant waves, now inhabited by the evanescent memories of lost enchantments and music.

I have been looking at Venetian paintings with abandoned passion for so many years … they are, like Venice, always difficult to leave, always intriguing. I fell in love with Venice at first sight, a raptured child recognizing her mother’s roots in the melody of its language and the magic aura I adore ever since. Nantas Salvalaggio dedicated a book to me as “veneziana nel cuore”. Venice is merciless to empty words, to mediocrity and compromise, almost cruel in its seductive indifference to anything less than breathtaking. If you want to think about someone or something, take the way to Venice. Only the truth will survive to its beauty. And never, ever go to Venice with someone you don’t love.
